This week in London food news: Rib Night, Pizza Festival & FREE beer!

14 March, 2016 — by Toni Ratcliff0

Our round-up of exciting things happening in London food news this week includes FREE beer, a pizza festival, discount ribs, and a new chicken shop with a difference. Go get em! Well maybe not right this minute, you may have to wait till they’re open.

FREE Beers every day until Easter!

This is one of the loveliest (and craziest) offers I’ve heard about so far this year, the landlord at the Hop and Berry pub in Islington is giving away 100 beers every day for the whole of Lent.

Yes it seems solemn religious observance is the enemy of getting people loaded, so this ingenious landlord has partnered with mobile app company Crowdit to tempt people off the wagon and into his boozer. He’s even funding it himself! All you have to do is download the app and pop down to The Hop & Berry from 4:30pm onwards to claim your free beer. Beers are limited to one per person, per day and you have until 24th March before the offer runs out or until the landlord realises he’s made a huge mistake.

The Blues Kitchen: Rib Night!

Hands up who likes ribs? Okay put your hands down, everyone at work will think you’re a weirdo. Tonight marks another Rib Night at The Blue’s Kitchen where you can get a stack of juicy, slow cooked beef and pork ribs for just £10! Plus there’ll be live Blues music from 9.45pm. The offer is running in all three of their restaurants, Shoreditch, Camden and Brixton, but you may need to make a reservation if you want to pop along. We’ll be going to the Shoreditch branch so maybe we’ll see you there? Just be cool guys, and don’t make eye contact.

Pizza festival: 3oth July

You doing anything on Saturday 30th July? Yeah, me neither. Well if you fancy it, MySliceFest is a new festival coming to London’s Wembley Park blending both pizza AND music! Whaaaat? Yup! On the music stage they have big names such as Luck & Neat, Rugrat, Martin 2 Smoove, Shorebitch and Complexion. Yeah… I haven’t really heard of any of those guys either but I had a mild chuckle at ‘Shorebitch’. And on the pizza stage(?) they’re offering traditional pizza slices alongside more exotic options such as popcorn pizza, waffle pizza, pizza cones, pizza with hotdogs and fries, and Nutella pizza. Super Early Bird tickets have already sold out so get your regular price ticket before it’s too late.

Pitt Cue re-opens in East London!

We mentioned that Pitt Cue Co. had permanently shut the doors of their Soho restaurant a few weeks ago, but luckily for you guys they reopened last week in their brand new digs in east London! And even better, their new pad is now even bigger than before and takes reservations!! Double whoop! I contacted the owners last week but they were quite grumpy and denied to comment, and their website is still very sparse, but I hear through the grapevine that the new menu will be a slightly more grown-up version than we are used to seeing – no more pulled pork or pickle backs – instead expect to see steaks, Mangalitza (lard pig) and even a bit of fish. No doubt this will be just as popular as it’s former incarnation.

Absurd Bird

Chicken fans will be pleased to hear that we have another bird on the block! Absurd Bird opens today in Spitalfields serving up chicken that is maize fed, as well as being hormone and additive free. You will be able to get your chicken spatchcocked or served on waffles, but you can also expect some more off-the-wall concoctions too, such as ‘hurricane popcorn’ and ‘sweet potato marshmallow bake’. I guess they ain’t called Absurd Bird for nothing…
