Best new music videos this week: The Last Skeptik, Burnt Out & more

28 February, 2016 — by Christopher Ratcliff0

Welcome to our weekly(ish) round-up of brilliant new music videos. This week we have goodies from The Last Skeptik, Burnt Out, Pony Pony Run Run, Alaska Gold Rush and Animal Collective.

Pat yourself on the back for having already heard of one of those bands.

The Last Skeptik – ‘Splinters’ [Dir: George Allen]

Another week, another music video designed to put you off eating fried chicken for life. This week, one of those reprobates from Rizzle Kicks calls a chicken shop employee a wanker and ends up in a six piece box. So that’s what happened to Rizzle Kicks!

Pony Pony Run Run – ‘Alright’ by [Dir: Mackenzie Sheppard]

In this video you can see what it’s like to be an umbrella. Hmm, how can I make that sound less shit? You can look at anywhere you like on a 360 degree pivot, you’re vaguely transparent and your new owner will take you to a Japanese brothel where you’ll get attacked by a sword. Yeah, that’s better.

Burnt Out – ‘Dear James’ [Dir: Burnt Out]

‘Dear James’ is perhaps our very favourite video of the year so far. It’s a brutal, but beautifully shot portrait of working class youth in Coolock, Dublin, focusing on the real-life public suicide of a teenager during the early ’00s recession. It’s painful, disquieting and fucking intense.

Animal Collective – ‘Golden Gal’ [Dir: Celeste Potter]

Well you probably need cheering up now, so here’s Animal Collective’s latest garish monstrosity. If you’re a Londoner your knee-jerk reaction may be to shout “fuck off” at it, but that’s just because the face reminds you of all those patronising Underground posters telling you how to behave properly. This is an entirely normal, healthy reaction. Please, vent away.

Alaska Gold Rush – Violent Streets [Dir: Mihnea Popescu]

Cute, until after it’s finished and you end up wondering what will be the fate of all those kittens in the hands of those violent sociopaths.
