Seven best new songs this week: Japandroids, Kid Cudi, Clipping & more

Welcome to our best new songs of the week round-up.

I can’t really explain it more succinctly than that.

I’ve tried the headline ‘Roughly 7-10 new music videos released in the last seven days (although probably longer because I wasn’t paying complete attention) rounded-up with the addition of my own comments that only I and perhaps one other person find funny’. But this was judged “fucking stupid” by a very expensive focus group.

I really shouldn’t have wasted all our revenue on that focus group.

This week sees the return of Japandroids, Kid Cudi and Salt Cathedral. Plus new videos from Anohni and Clipping, and debuts from Coco Banana and will tha dope boy.

Focus group be damned.

Japandroids – Near to the Wild Heart of Life

Japandroids are back with a new album in the new year, and a they’ve unleashed brand new single – the title track, ‘Near to the Wild Heart of Life’. It’s a wilfully positive slice of rock ‘n’ roll that makes you believe you can achieve anything today. If only you didn’t have to wait inside for a package between 8am and 8pm. Otherwise… well I can only speculate on your possible achievements if you weren’t condemned to your own home… but you might at least have had a shower.

Kid Cudi – Surfin’ ft. Pharrell Williams

Kid Cudi says in his infectious new single, ‘Surfin’, “I ain’t ridin’ no waves, too busy making my own waves” making it clear that this is not a song about the water sports pursuit, but in fact a metaphor. For what? Probably late night shopping on eBay after half a bottle of white wine.

Anohni – Hopelessness

Anohni releases the title track from her exceptional album Hopelessness, and it’s bonkers. But it also helpfully answers the question, “where are you going to put the eels you caught today?”

Coco Banana – Earthquaker (Screw Edit)

Animator Simon Landrein has created an extraordinary animated video for Coco Banana (imagine The Knife but with a renewed joie de vivre), full of bulging groins and cartoonish violence. Just as an aside, would you be a complete weirdo if you found all this quite sexy? Right good, yes, just checking.

Clipping – Shooter

Clipping are a rap trio from LA, whose second album Splendour and Misery, released a few months ago, was a phenomenal piece of stripped down experimental hip-hop. Ironically this song about gun violence was its most playful track. Awesome video too.

Salt Cathedral – Unraveling (featuring Matisyahu)

Brooklyn duo (by way of Colombia) Salt Cathedral return with a new single ‘Unravelling’. It’s an incredible mixture of atmospheric dream-pop and sweaty dancehall, you assume it wouldn’t work but crikey it’s one of the most captivating tracks out this week.

will tha dope boy – watch the way i navigate

I’ll end the round-up by picking out the very best unsolicited email submission from my inbox. This week it’s will tha dope boy, whose capitalisation-shy email merely ended with just blast my shit, christopher. blast it.

Good advice…
