What started as an April Fool’s Day joke last year has now become terrifying reality… in Sadako Vs Kayako, the vengeful spirits from the Ringu and Ju-On series of Japanese horror movies will do battle in Sadako vs. Kayako, due to be released on 18th June.

Ringu (or Ring as it’s known outside Japan) is the most terrifying movie ever made and has genuinely haunted me ever since I first watched it on a tiny portable telly alone late one night in 1998. (That portable telly would remain sat in exile outside my bedroom door ever since). Apart from ‘shitting me right up’ Ringu also introduced the West to the dread-soaked world of J-horror, influencing a whole generation of filmmakers bored of hokey slasher movies and giving rise to endless sequels (Sadako 3D anyone?), remakes (both Japanese and American) and pale imitations.

The palest imitation of which being Ju-On (or The Grudge as it was renamed for US/UK audiences), a TV movie that was relentless in where its ghoulish apparition would appear from next (“Aggggh, it’s in my bed!” “Aggggh it’s in the cupboard!” “Aggggh it’s in Pot Noodle!”). And thanks to the viral success of a seemingly fake trailer released last April Fool’s Day, the mother and son tag-team of Kayako and Tosho will finally meet the last person on Earth still using VHS technology, Sadako.

Although this is unlikely to make up for every other previous disappointing cinematic grudge match (Aliens vs. Predator, Freddy vs. Jason, Batman vs. Superman) perhaps this will at least answer the question, “which vengeful spirit has the ickiest hair?”
