Best new music videos this week: Run the Jewels, Grimes & more

Meowpurrdy-run the jewels video

This week’s round-up of new music videos is our best yet, with not a single stinker among them. Just some great music backed by promos that can only be described as completely bonkers.

Bixel Boys & Poupon – ‘Ain’t Your Girl’ [dir: pavel brenner]

A lethal dance-off that’s a cross between You Got Served and Battle Royale. This one has it all: dirty-as-hell techno, some eye-poppingly incredible dance moves and loads of murder. Everything the kids of today love.

Victoria+Jean – ‘Härligt Sverige’ [DIR: Corentin Kopp]

This is a phenomenal slice of Swedish-noir. Victoria+Jean provide a hypnotic, almost euphoric lament on something that has gone VERY wrong, and the video provides the perfect accompaniment. It’s full of 4:3 framed faces of Swedish people looking terribly worried, before an ambiguous reveal at the end suggesting that, once again, something has gone VERY wrong. Stellar work. Give them all a job on Wallander.

Run The Jewels feat. Lil Bub, Maceo, Delonte – ‘Meowpurrdy’ [DIR: cyriak]

Taken from last year’s Run the Jewels‘ cat-noise remix album Meow the Jewels, a project that essentially came about because of a dare, ‘Meowpurrdy’ features cat megastar Lil’ Bub and has a video directed by Cyriak, whose work you will already have seen if you’ve taken a fuck-ton of mushrooms and stared at slow-motion footage of cats exploding. Warning: might make you throw-up next time you see a cat.

El Guincho – ‘Comix’ [DIR: canada]

After a five year wait, El Guincho is back! His phenomenal track Bombay from 2000 is still one of my all-time favourite videos, and although ‘Comix’ has less of a pervy Russ Meyer vibe this is just as unpredictable and bewilderingly creative. Stick with it…

Grimes – ‘Kill V. Maim’ [dir: claire boucher]

It’s just so good to have Grimes back. Here’s ‘Kill V. Maim’ taken from our album of 2015, Art Angels with a video that seems to be partly filmed on both the set of Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ and on a kawaii remake of Fast and Furious. Yes it’s basically the inside of Grimes’ head.
