All the best film festivals, screenings & events in London: August 2016

11 August, 2016 — by Ben Rabinovich0

Samuel Johnson once said, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” Johnson clearly never had to take the Central Line to work in the middle of summer or pay £30 to get into a nightclub, but his point still stands. London is a hub of craft beer pubs, burger restaurants, multiple branches of Subway and most importantly, fun film stuff.

Here we’ll round-up all the best film related events in London happening throughout August, from festivals and one-off screenings, to art exhibitions and epic quizzes where you can finally try out that brilliant team name you’ve been ruminating over for weeks now… I’m bagsying Billy Quiztal.

New films due out in August

The Shallows [12th August]

The Shallows is essentially Blake Lively V Great White Shark, which right now sounds far more appealing than the three-hour ultimate cut of Batman V Superman

Wiener Dog [12th August]

Todd Solondz’s latest centres on the adventures of a cute little dachshund as it gets passed from owner to owner. Like the film Twenty Bucks but way more sweary.

Swallows and Amazons [19th August]

A nice wholesome adventure for nice wholesome people. We’re not invited.

War Dogs: [26th August]

Jonah Hill and Miles Teller star in Todd Phillips’ latest douchebag comedy War Dogs.

Purge: Election Year [26th August]

In an unlikely turn of events, The Purge films are getting better and better. This one will prove to be even more terrifyingly well-timed.

Bad Moms [26th August]

Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell. YOU NEED MORE REASONS TO SEE A MOVIE?

Star Trek Beyond

We said: Somewhere in Simon Pegg’s desk draw there’s a full, funny, warm-hearted Star Trek Beyond script, fully imbued with the spirit of the original series while also incorporating the best of this generation’s self-awareness. 3/5

Finding Dory

We said: We were fools to be concerned about Finding Dory of course. Did we learn nothing from Toy Story 2? From Monsters University? From Toy Story 3? Pixar is a studio which, as of yet, has never taken its audience for granted (don’t mention Cars 2. Even Ghandi had to pay the bills). 4/5

Suicide Squad

We said: Suicide Squad is the sleazy creep in the club who tries to gatecrash a hen night by making sexist jokes, spilling WKD on himself and grinding up on the bride-to-be. 1/5

Suicide-Squad

Jason Bourne

We said: Jason Bourne isn’t really a ‘Bourne’ film – a lot of the time, it’s not about him at all. It’s not about anything really. Brilliant but mindless action sequences, same old plot. 2/5

bourne-2

The Neon Demon

We said: The Neon Demon is part lurid exploitation movie, part luxurious photo-spread in a fashion magazine you barely have the strength to lift, or the patience to make past all the adverts. It is nothing short of a masterpiece. 5/5
